This three half-day e-conference explores how to use steel in an effective and sustainable way. Industry leaders from Arup, BCSA, COWI, and SCI – among many others – share best practices in design, fabrication, and reuse.
The climate emergency is one of a number of drivers forcing professions across the built environment to consider how to design in an effective and sustainable way, while also delivering good design to the steel structures they design and build.
The IStructE’s Using steel in changing times eConference will help structural engineers understand how to deliver good designs that can be fabricated, executed, refurbished, and demounted for reuse while also considering how to assess, source and reuse steel. The conference will cover real life examples of how material and design efficiency can be achieved.
The IStructE’s eConference on Using steel in changing times will explore the following themes:
– Designing efficiently with steel – design solutions
– Fabrication & execution
– Reuse and refurbishment
Learning outcomes:
- Understand how to undertake more efficient and sustainable designs and the benefits they bring
- Understand the different, and sometimes opposing, ways of reducing embodied carbon
- Appreciate the importance of the relationship between design and build and the critical aspects of modelling/joints/connections and assembly needing consideration.
- Gain an appreciation of what is required to make a design buildable, demountable and reusable structures
- Increased confidence on how to assess a building for reuse or refurbishment
