We develop software for structural engineers and detailers. Our development team researches, tests, and applies new methods of analyzing the behaviour of structures and their members. Based on this, we created IDEA StatiCa – software that enables engineers to work faster, evaluate requirements of the national code thoroughly, and use the optimal amount of material. For us, creating software is a way to contribute to making every new construction around the world safer and cheaper.

AED Testimonial

Applied Engineering Design (AED), a pioneering Scottish engineering design specialist with offices in Edinburgh and Bath has been a customer of IDEA StatiCa since 2018. Most notably, AED is using the software on the Battersea Power Station project – one of the biggest regeneration projects in Europe and an iconic landmark on London’s riverbank.

As mentioned before, AED was founded by Tim Hetherington in 2008. The main offices are located in Edinburgh and Bath. They are known to have various specialisms, which exist as part of a wide skill base, and this board perspective is necessary for their overall success. As part of this outlook, they do not promote one structural form and technology over another. They do so as they believe this is sensible, attractive and economically friendly. Overall they have strong expertise which enables them to assist their clients helpfully. They do this by communicating to clients using language they understand – ‘Productive relationships result’

In this video, we take a deeper look into AED’s impressive Battersea Power Station project and how they have implemented IDEA StatiCa.

It is a particularly complex commission and we have become early adopters of IDEA StatiCa because its advanced design and check process is both powerful and quick enough to be a useful tool in our everyday work as structural engineers for fabricators. I had become aware of the limitations of commonplace software and I had been looking for an alternative.
