Based on this, we created IDEA StatiCa – software that enables engineers to work faster, evaluate requirements of the national code thoroughly, and use the optimal amount of material. THE STORY OF INNOVATION
Structural engineering has always been an industry pioneering new technologies. It was the first one to widely adopt finite element analysis. Structural engineers around the world use FEA-based software to analyze and design buildings and structures of all types. However, the application of FEA is limited to the overall analysis of the structure, the global analytical model. Since we introduced the idea of using FEA specifically for steel connection design, the game has changed significantly.
PATENTED CONNECTION DESIGN
IDEA StatiCa, the world-leading software for analysis and design of steel connections and concrete members, is now officially patented. What’s the biggest difference?
We can now design and code-check all types of connections, not just the ones in design guides. The secret lies in implementing the unique Component-based Finite Element Method (CBFEM) in IDEA StatiCa. CBFEM effectively combines all the code equations and conditions with finite elements, breaking down the topology and loading limits of the old methods.
NOVEL, INNOVATIVE, APPLICABLE
The chances of successfully applying for a patent in the structural engineering software business are very slim. In most countries, the software cannot be patented at all, only the underlying method/approach can actually be patented. So that is exactly what we have done and succeeded at doing so with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
The patent process is extremely rigorous and took us almost six years, solidifying our solution as a novel, innovative, and applicable improvement in the daily work of structural engineers.
