About IDEA StatiCa

We develop software for structural engineers and detailers. Our development team researches, tests, and applies new methods of analyzing the behaviour of structures and their members. Based on this, we created IDEA StatiCa – software that enables engineers to work faster, evaluate requirements of the national code thoroughly, and use the optimal amount of material. For us, creating software is a way to contribute to making every new construction around the world safer and cheaper.

HILTI adapts CBFEM technology

IDEA StatiCa UK

This article explores the adoption of component-based Finite Element Method (CBFEM) technology by HILTI. Both, HILTI and IDEA StatiCa have joined forces to enhance steel and concrete connections for structural. The purpose of this is to improve workflow, productiveness, and safety involved in construction projects.

The new approach takes HILTI`s expertise in anchors and concrete, and IDEA StatiCa`s knowledge in steel design and Finite Element Method (FEM) to develop a unique solution for analyzing connections between steel and concrete. This method provides a more practical approach to design and addresses challenges of line manual data transfers and design assumption discrepancies. For more detailed information, you can visit the article directly here.

Hilti and IDEA StatiCa agreed to improve steel and concrete connections for structural engineers, making them more efficient and accurate. Hilti and IDEA StatiCa will work together to improve workflow, productivity, and safety in construction projects.

According to Oliver Glockner, Head of Application Software Product Management at Hilti, the complexity of connections, anchoring, and workflows is continuously increasing. Therefore, Hilti aims to assist structural engineers by providing them with the latest analysis technology, enabling them to enhance their speed, accuracy, and overall processes.

New Solution launched

To address the challenges we face today and in the future, it was necessary to adopt a completely new method of analyzing the connection between steel and concrete. By leveraging Hilti engineers‘s expertise in anchors and concrete, along with over a decade of experience in construction software, and combining it with IDEA StatiCa‘s knowledge in steel design and software related to it, and Finite Element Method (FEM), a one-of-a-kind solution has been created for these issues.

The novel method uses a strong computational tool that effectively solves finite-element problems and incorporates precise material models. It also offers an exceptional explanation of how anchors behave, enabling a more practical approach to designing the connection. Furthermore, the two organizations have collaborated to overcome obstacles in the existing design procedure, such as the need for multiple manual data transfers and discrepancies in design assumptions, such as using rigid and non-rigid baseplates. Additionally, they have worked towards enhancing the efficiency of managing workflow changes.

Early involvement and feedback from customers supported the improvements:

Marianne Johannsson, Structural Engineering Manager at Balco Group“Design of a plate (full connection including anchors, stiffeners, base plate, etc.) might take up to 4 hours plus 2 hours to create the report. PROFIS Engineering Suite could save us up to 50% of the time. We’ve been waiting for this!”

Per Jørstad, Structural Engineer at Sweco; “We can save up to 50% in time spent – from 2-6 hours to 1-2 hours – by doing all checks with one piece of software”.

“We believe that the new component-based finite element method (CBFEM) is the right approach to break the limits of anchoring/footing topologies while keeping safety first. We put the CBFEM into the core of our product, IDEA StatiCa Connection, and Hilti has integrated it in their new PROFIS Engineering Suite”, said Lubomir Šabatka, CEO at IDEA StatiCa.
