About IDEA StatiCa

We develop software for structural engineers and detailers. Our development team researches, tests, and applies new methods of analyzing the behaviour of structures and their members. Based on this, we created IDEA StatiCa – software that enables engineers to work faster, evaluate requirements of the national code thoroughly, and use the optimal amount of material. For us, creating software is a way to contribute to making every new construction around the world safer and cheaper.

 

New features of version 6.3

Version 6.3 is an intermediate update of version 6, but nevertheless it provides some very important new features and improvements, making IDEA Connection even faster, easier and powerful that ever before.
This release is free of charge for all users of version 6, and can be downloaded from our Downloads area.

There has been a huge improvement in the speed of IDEA Connection, since we managed to optimize the solver,  to make calculations of joints/connections up to 10 times times faster!! Below is a table that shows the comparison in some results:

We have developed a new method for cutting members, that allows the user to cut any type of member and combination of members.  One example of this is the cutting of a rectangular section from a tubular section.

We have integrated the possibility to deactivate the tension/shear interaction check of bolts, as many of our users has requested.

We have developed a new Robot Structural add-in, to enable a direct link between Robot and IDEA Connection. As with other links to CAE software, the user is able to import the complete geometry of the connection and the loads applied to the node, with a few clicks. Later he can define all the manufacturing operations inside IDEA Connection, and perform the analysis.

We have improved significantly the current manufacturing operation Work plane, by creating a graphical representation of the plane in the 3D view, making it very for the user to define the plane’s position in the model.

We have improved the method of effective area determination and also its graphical representation. The Calculated effective area is now marked as green. The Final effective area for contact stress check is highlighted as shaded.

We have also improved the Widener manufacturing operation. Now it is possible to use that for modeling of large haunches.

However, please take into account some yet unsupported functionalities and the workarounds that can be used:

  • Notches/hole in plates/members and stubs. Workaround: Import the whole joint and manually add these in IDEA Connection
  • Bended plates. Workaround: Use two plates welded together
  • Welded and composed cross-sections. Workaround: Properly define cross-sections in Tekla
  • Cuts by CHS and RHS profile. Workaround: Import the whole joint and manually add these in IDEA Connection
  • Anchoring and base plate. Workaround: Import the whole joint and manually add these in IDEA Connection

 

Remarks:

  • Be aware that there is not a proper description of rounding of hot-rolled sections in Tekla Structures, IDEA Connection defines missing values by itself
  • Always check imported bolts/welds and add necessary data if missing in Tekla Structures
  • We are continuously adding profile types (huge variety in Tekla Structures)
